Congratulations James Kumbal!

           James Kumbal's Story

James Kumbal came from a single parent home. He managed his own way through high school. When he gained admission into Polytechnic, his uncle was paying his school fees. His uncle is a farmer. During every holiday break James will spend his time working on his uncle’s farm so he can earn some money to buy school supplies. In the winter of 2007, Kumbal’s uncle became ill and was admitted at the hospital. His uncle could no longer support him in his education due to his illness. Kumbal no longer has any person to help him. At that point, he was in his final year in his accounting program. Sabu Help provided a scholarship of two hundred dollars (US $200) to James Kumbal to pay for the completion of his education. James has completed his accounting program and obtain a diploma degree in 2008. He did his national service with a company in Ghana. Currently working as an accountant/comp controller in District in Sunyani, Brong Ahafo Region. His has also gained admission into University of Science and Technology, Ghana to continues is undergraduate education.

Lariba’s Story

 

Name: Agura Agnes Lariba

Age: 19

Current School: Tamale Business Secondary School

Career Interest: Accounting

Lariba is attending a business school in Northern Ghana, Tamale. She chose to attend school in Tamale because the school has lower tuition and fees that she can afford. Her parents are divorce. Currently, Lariba lives with another woman in Ashanti Region of Ghana, Kumasi where she works as a house maid. During holidays and vacations, Lariba travels 235 miles / 378 km from Tamale to Kumasi to work to earn money for her education. Lariba is determined to continue her education to become an accountant but her dream may not be possible without financial support.  Without an education, Lariba will have few choices. She may end up working for little pay in bad conditions such as selling things on the street (Kayaayoo Girl) which is dangerous because she could get raped or may engage in early marriage, and unwanted pregnancy.  Without an education, she won’t have a chance to improve her life and the lives of others in her community.

Name: Aligiba Leona

Age: 18

School: Navrongo Secondary School

Career Interest: Nurse

 

Leona lives in the village of Biu in Upper East Region of Ghana, the poorest and driest part of the country. Leona is still in high school (Senior Secondary School) and is desired to continue her education to become a nurse.  Leona’s dad passed away leaving behind her and her mom with other seven siblings.  Her mom struggled her way out and worked harder to support Leona to attending Secondary School. Leona is determined to continue her education to become a nurse but her dream may not be possible without financial support.  Without an education, Leona will have few choices. She may end up working for little pay in bad conditions such as selling things on the street which is dangerous because she could get raped or may engage in early marriage, and unwanted pregnancy.  Without an education, she won’t have a chance to improve her life and the lives of her sisters and brothers and others in her community.

 

Name: Aligiba Nelson

Age: 23

School: Officer Commanding Regional Police Training School

Career Interest: Teacher/ Police Officer

 

Nelson lives in the village of Biu in Upper East Region of Ghana, the poorest and driest part of the country.  He is desired to continue his education to become a teacher or police officer.  Nelson’s dad passed away leaving behind him and his mom with other seven siblings.  His mom struggled her way out and worked harder to support him to complete Secondary School. Nelson has passed all his classes and wishes to continue his education to become a teacher or police officer. After graduation from High School, he was unable to continue his education because of financial limitations. Nelson stayed home and supported his mom to assist his younger sister Leona to attend Secondary School.  Nelson currently has been offered an admission into Police Training College. Without a financial support, Nelson will have few choices. He may not be able to attend college end up staying home and have no means to earn income to support himself and his family. He may be recruitment into rebels group or related illegal groups. Without an education, he won’t have a chance to improve his life, support  his sisters and others in her community.

How it works

When you sponsor a student with Sabu Help, you will receive a welcome letter with information about your student, their school and their community.

We ensure you are regularly updated on the developments of your sponsored student in Ghana.

We encourage you to exchange letters with your sponsored Student and learn about their life and their fascinating country. Sabu Help can also arrange trips for you to meet your student visit their school and see the difference you are making to a community in Ghana.

Sabu Help’s in-country team works with schools to identify the most vulnerable students - those at the greatest risk of dropping out of school due to chronic poverty. Once we have found a sponsor, our experienced team manages your donations and pay directly to school. You will pay for fees and tuition ONLY and directly to your student (s), so you can be sure your support is going to the right place.

What do you receive?

We value the continued support of donors throughout the world and we want to ensure you are regularly updated on the developments of your sponsored student in Ghana. As a student sponsor you will receive each year:

  • A letter and/or picture from your student (or a letter from the parent of student). Within 12 weeks, you should receive your first letter from the child you have sponsored.

    You can write to your child whenever you like, but it may take up to 2 months for letters to delivered by hand.

  • Photo (4 x 6) with the student name and story
  • Exam results/grades.
  • Monthly news e-mail updates from Sabu Help work.

How much does sponsorship cost?

In order to support the education of a student we ask sponsors to pay US ($600) or $50 a month per year. Sponsor amount may decrease base on the year in school. Usually, the first year tuition and fees are higher the the second and third year.

How does your money get spent?

Your sponsorship money is spent in the following way:

Pay Tuition and Fees which covers housing. Students are responsible for schools supplies.
